The Jericho Foundation's accomplishments and goals can be described in one word: HOPE.
Healthy Initiatives
Opportunities and New Experiences
Personal Relationships
Education
On a recent trip to the orphanage being helped by Jericho, workers showed visitors from the USA the medicine cabinet containing first-aid and over the counter medications that are needed everyday. We're happy to say that the supplies donated to the Jericho Foundation have been very useful and appreciated. There is a need to replenish the cabinet now. Health care sounds like an insurmountable and complex issue, but by stocking one medicine cabinet, so many will be easily helped.
Exchange program where teens from Bosnia experience a trip to the U.S. and West Michigan families experience the joy of serving as hosts.
Through generous donations, we have been able to serve as sponsor of an exchange program, which has allowed young Bosnian students the opportunity to experience life in the United States. This program provides a much needed break from the daily challenges of life in Bosnia. Upon departure, one student said, "although I am going home to the same dark hole, I am going back a changed person. I had lost all hope; now I have hope." This program offers such an opportunity to make a difference, and through continued support the exchange program will continue to reach out to those in need.
Cottage industry that provides small but important streams of revenue for Bosnian families. Products are hand-made woven cloths, table runners and other linens.
Scarves, table runners, bookmarkers, and even purses and sweaters are but a few of the items we now offer for purchase. Each is hand-made in Bosnia. The sale of these items, many times, represents the main source of household income for a family. This program has a great opportunity for expansion. As the demand for items increases more Bosnian women are able to offer much needed financial support to their families.
Under the sponsorship of the Jericho Foundation several young people from Bosnia and the United States have been connected through our Pen Pal Program. Often a forgotten group in Bosnia, these friends embrace the opportunity to correspond with their "international sisters". Encouragement and support flow both ways as the girls exchange letters and small gifts. What an important program this has become, and with additional support we can continue to grow and see even more young people enfolded into healthy, supportive relationships.
War stripped Bosnia of a skilled, educated workforce. Jericho strives to rebuild the lost intellectual capital of Bosnia by providing scholarships to college and four-year high school. At present the Jericho Foundation sponsors two students in Bosnia. The scholarship program affords both the education and the training needed for these young adults to become integral parts in Bosnia's rebuilding process. Without the Jericho Foundation scholarships, college was out of the question. Many more students are in need of similar support. With additional funding we will be able to address these needs.
